Fay Gale Sculpture – University of Adelaide

Project Overview

In 2025, the University of Adelaide unveiled a bronze statue of Professor Emerita Fay Gale AO, the first woman in the University's history to receive such an honour. The sculpture, created by figurative sculptor Meliesa Judge of Liquid Metal Studios, stands as a tribute to female scholarship at the University of Adelaide

A.R.C Stonemasonry played a pivotal role in the project by designing and constructing the stone base for the statue. This involved sourcing and extracting slate from a local quarry, hand-carving the inscriptions, and installing the base to ensure the sculpture's stability and prominence.

Scope of Work

  • Design Collaboration: Worked closely with the artist to design a stone base that complements the bronze sculpture and honours Professor Gale's legacy.

  • Slate Sourcing: Identified and extracted high-quality slate from a local quarry to match the aesthetic requirements of the project.

  • Letter Carving: Hand-carved inscriptions into the slate base, ensuring precision and alignment with the overall design.

  • Installation: Coordinated the transportation and installation of the stone base, ensuring it was securely positioned to support the sculpture.

Project Outcome

The completed Fay Gale Sculpture now stands proudly on the University of Adelaide's North Terrace campus, serving as a lasting tribute to Professor Gale's contributions to academia and gender equity. The stone base, crafted by A.R.C Stonemasonry, provides a solid foundation for the sculpture and enhances its visual impact.
